Objective:To compare the effect of topical finasteride on hair loss in men with and without elevated alopecia. A total of 690 patients with alopecia had a hair density test done at baseline and at 1 and 3 months follow-up. After treatment, all patients experienced a reduction in hair density, and the mean change in alopecia was 5.3 cm/s. At 6 months, 6.2% of patients had normal hair growth, 1.4% had alopecia were lost to hair growth, 1.4% was male and 0.7% was female. At 1 month, the mean change in alopecia was 4.2 cm/s, and the change was not significant.

Methods:A total of 90 patients were randomized to receive topical finasteride for 3 months and placebo for 6 months.
